Occupying the dubious ground between metal, techno. Monty Python and Foetus are Slightly Miffed. You kinda get the idea by their name that they're taking the piss out of hard bands with heavy names.
Way back in the dawn of the 90's, Mark, TinK and Jez formed a band with high hopes - but the cosmic timing of the project was completely out of kilter. They split up.
Later that day (or soon after anyway), two rogue guitarists and a shy computer started the Slightly Miffed saga. They soon decided it would be much better for the audience to have someone to laugh at, so they frog-marched Jez, from the original (badly planned) band, back to sunny Trowbridge, UK. There, joined by new vocalist Jon, they were underway.
The band points out that if there is a centre to the musical universe, Trowbridge is the furthest point from it. This fact hasn't stopped them from getting radio play around the world and reviews from far away places like… New Zealand. They set themselves up on the world wide web when most people thought the "internet" was a large fishing accessory.
In their spare time, going under the name Slightly Designed, they've manage to design and programme other people's web sites. This has been so successful, it has enabled the band to set up their own record company - the sensibly named Slightly Fishy Records.
Their debut album "Puzzled?" is way out there. Multiple tempo changes and bizarre lyrics erratically spread over thumping techno beats, shredding guitars and slightly odd samples that never fail to raise a smile. Don't confuse hypnotic techno with the Miffed. Despite the beats being computer generated, there is little repetition going on - in fact, these boys seem very at home making you guess where they're gonna take you next - and 10:1 says you lose every time.
Admittedly, the idea of comedy metal sounds slightly half baked, but Slightly Miffed have been in the oven for long enough, and they're completely well done.
Said UK's DB Music Review "It is clear that loads of time, plenty of musical talent and huge amounts of fun have gone into making this entertaining, sometimes dark and heavy, sometimes just plain daft album. Well presented, well packaged, well produced and very, very good."
Noise Level Critical zine UK said "If you like to hear something wildly different, you really need to hear this."
Tracks of Creation Canada opined "Most unique release of the year."
"Puzzled?" is all of this and more. 14 irresistible brain-frying tracks that rock like true bastards. With tongue firmly in cheek Slightly Miffed have a unique product on their hands, and one shudders at the thought of the clone bands that will inevitably spring up to follow in the footsteps of their success. What next, you may well ask; Bart Simpson's Black Metal Brigade? Seinfeld's Satanic Sortee? Whatever it may be, those that come in the future will have to be more than slightly ok to beat the comedy kings of Slightly Miffed.
Negotiations are underway to allow Rukkus! Records to distribute Slightly Miffed down under. In the meantime, for a taste of something slightly fishy, head to their homepage on the internet (it's one of the best we've seen) at http://www.miffed.com/ or email the band at slightly@miffed.com.
